I finished a book today.

1. "The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao", by Junot Diaz
- SHELF BOOK. Worth buying, but it might get dusty with time.

This book won the 2008 Pulitzer for Novels. And with good reason, it is awesome. It's about a guy called Oscar Cabral and his family. They come from the Dominican Republic, and live in New Jersey now. While introducing the reader to the recent history of the Dominican Republic, as well as to its roots with magic and fukú, we learn about the difficulties Oscar has growing up, being a nerd in a culture and a family that doesn't really appreciate that in its boys. There's also his sister Lola, who has to find her identity while dealing with an overbearing mother that would rather see her dead than "doing her own thing". After all, Dominican women must act like Dominican women. Finally, there's the painful story of their mother, Hypatía Belicia Cabral (a.k.a. "Beli"), who was an orphan raised by her aunt, and suffered the corruption of Trujillo's government (he was a tyrant that ruled the Dominican Republic for 31 years) firsthand. This book was very different from anything I've ever read. It gives you a look at what it's like to grow up as a nerd in Latin America. Not to be a victim here, but I've been there, and whenever it talked about Oscar's life, I was all "OMG THAT IS SO TRUE". When his "friends" ignored him to go after girls, when he had to stay in the library during recess so the bullies wouldn't kick his ass, the hell that was middle school... Yep, been there, done that.

I also haven't finished "Breaking Dawn".
OMG SPOILERZ )

Random Top Model trivia: That song was also used in the promo for the fourth season of Australia's Next Top Model. The more you know!

1. Do you like the look of your country's currency (bills and coins)?
Yeah, I think they're nice and colorful. And they depict enough historical figures from different historical times. There's Nezahualcoyotl (the Aztec poet) in the $100 bill, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz (another poet from when we were a Spanish colony) in the $200 bill, José María Morelos (Independence hero) in the $50 bill, Miguel Hidalgo (another Indepdence hero) in the $1000 bill, Benito Juárez (Reform hero) in the $20 bill, Álvaro Obregón (Revolution hero) in the $500 bill, etc. And the coins are colored in silver and gold. How cool is THAT?

2. Regardless of their actual value, do you like bills or coins better?
I prefer coins. They are timeless and show off more things about their country and their time than a piece of paper that may very well be worthless if we all say so. Also, they don't give me as many headaches as bills and cheques when I'm trying to study for my Business Law exam.

3. What is your favorite foreign currency? And why?
Hmmm this is a tough one. Euros are very nice, but they kindda look like Mexican currency. Similar colors and everything. Dollars are boring, all the same color, and the coins are freakin confusing. I don't understand why smaller coins are worth more than bigger coins, it doesn't make any sense! British pounds are pretty cool, especially the heavy £1 coins. And I like how they use the face of the king or queen. I dunno, I guess British pounds PWN the rest.

4. Do you collect coins or bills? Elaborate.
Both. I inherited both collections from my mom. I also got her postage stamp and postcard collections. We have the collector bug, I guess. She has these cool coins from the Soviet Union that are soooo light, you can almost not feel them. They're about as thick as tin foil, srsly.

5. Do you think human society could make do completely without money? Explain.
Hell no, because then I'd have to choose a different major!

ETA: 21 pages of notes later, I am done studying. And the exam of doom is in 4 and a half hours. My mom's fish oil capsules better do their job. *iz ded*

We live in uncertain times. Earthquakes, hurricanes, the ever-present threat of zombies—do you have a disaster plan ready in case one of these things happens to you?

View 500 Answers

Earthquakes: There was one in Culiacán a few years ago, damaged the entire infrastructure of the city, but they fixed it after a year. I'd say the best plan would be to stand under a doorframe or table until it's over, and then pick up all the broken stuff from the floor. If it's as huge as the one that happened in Mexico City in 1985, then the only plan you can have is to pray for your soul and for your country's future.

Hurricanes: Meh, grew up with them all over my hometown. Just have bottled water, canned goods, battery-operated appliances (radio, blender, coffee-maker, flashlight), lots of toilet paper, a cellphone, and dry sheets in storage.

Zombies: OMG has anyone seen that Spanish movie called "REC"? So freakin scary. It's about this camera crew that gets trapped in an apartment building where there are zombie attacks, and the government won't let them get out because the zombies are created by some evil bacteria. Soooo scary. Hmmm I guess I'd just be prepared with disposable lightsabers in my closet. You never know when you'll need one.

1. Reply to this post, and I will pick five of your icons.
2. Make a post (including the meme info) and talk about the icons I chose.
3. Other people can then comment to you and make their own posts.
4. This will create a never-ending cycle of icon glee.

1)
I made this one! I used a base from [info]topmodel_icons and added the smilie all by myself lol. I needed an Australia's Next Top Model icon, so I thought this one would be kewl. Now I use it for all my posts in [info]ausntm, [info]all_ausntm, [info]all_ausntm_new, etc.

2)
I got this one from [info]topmodel_icons. I like it because CariDee's (winner of season 7, holla) expression is hilarious. Plus, it introduced me to the expression "OIC".

3)
I don't remember where I got this one, but it was around the time that DH came out, and [info]sevenths_brain was somehow involved. I think it's funny and neutral, so I use it all the time. =P

4)
Got this one from [info]heroes_icons, back when I actually watched the show and wanted moar icons.

5)
I stole this one from someone at [info]topmodel, and use it on my rare food-related entries. I love Family Guy <3

Writer's Block: Lenny Bruce

Before George Carlin exposed the seven words you can’t say on television, comedian Lenny Bruce was arrested multiple times for saying all seven, and more, on stage. Who is today’s most groundbreaking comedian? Or is there even any ground left to break?

View 332 Answers

With comedy, I don't think there ever was any ground to break. No matter how horrible the economy is, how many wars their countries are involved in, or how evil they are, people will laugh at something. Whether it's a parody of Barney confessing that he is gay, or Tina Fey's awesome Sarah Palin impersonation, I think what matters is that they make people's day a bit better by bringing them joy. That said, my favorite comedians are probably the Seinfeld quartet, Tina Fey, and Amy Poehler.

Why, oh pencil tip
must thou break?
Why dost thou trip
with thy friend Calculus?!

Does thy sharpness not
appreciate our effort
in sharpening thy tip
ever since we were young and hot?

Looking at thy tip
so weak and porose
I can feel the whip
on my shattered heart.

What Kind of Drink Are You?

You are a Cosmopolitan. You are quiet and content. You don't stand out too much, but you don't mind and don't care what people think of you. You don't need everything to be perfect, as long as you get what matters. Sure, you may be 'girly' and you may not be the smartest, craziest or most refined, but you really like yourself, and that's fine by you.

Which Disney Villain Are You?

You are part Lady Tremaine. You're the evil stepmother little girls have nightmares about. Hooray for you, who helped kids learn to love their birth parents and do everything possible to avoid stepparents. Next time, though, be careful not to get in between a girl and her dreams.
You are part Captain Hook. The crusher of dreams. You are Disney's one and only funny villain. But don't discredit the evilness that is Captain Hook. You do your part in scaring little children and teaching a generation of adults to yearn for childhood again. Cuz hey, you just want to fly too.

1. Do you download music not from the popular genres of Top 40, pop, rock, rap, dance, R&B, or country?
Well, I don't download music anymore. I usually get it from CDs or friends.

2. Are there any musicians for whom you've downloaded a significant amount of their material yet own few or none of their albums?
I downloaded a crapload of Beatles songs before buying 2 of their albums, and getting a bunch of them from [info]fantasist_aqua.

3. Have you ever enjoyed a downloaded album so much that you went and bought the physical album?
No.

4. How many different ways of playing music do you own (such as radio, stereo system, computer, Walkman/Discman, mp3 player, mp3-ready phone, etc.)?
Radio, IPod mini, computer, discman, CD player, and cassette player.

5. Do you still have and/or play a favorite vinyl album, cassette tape, or 8-track tape?
No.

Revenge of Mish-Mosh!

1. Remember the scene with Molly Ringwald putting lipstick on by holding it in her cleavage? Name one really bizarre thing you know how to do. No matter how small.
I can twist my thumbs all the way to the back of their corresponding wrists, and my skin stretches like it's made of rubber.

2. What's your favourite way to pass the time?
Posting in online forums, and reading.

3. What's your favourite restaurant and why?
The Trattorias in Italy are the best I've ever had. There's something about foreign homemade food that's always welcome, plus it was Italian.

4. Which TV/Radio show did you like that's not aired any more?
Cybill, The Nanny, and Gilmore Girls :(

5. If you had a choice of learning another new language, what would you choose? what do you think that reflects about you?
I would love to learn German, because it just feels like the next one for me. I think it reflects the fact that I don't really plan which languages I wanna learn, but that I really love Europe.

Friday Five: If you...

1. You're holding a dinner party and can invite three famous people from the past or present; who would they be?
Tyra Banks, Andrew Lloyd Weber, and Auguste Renoir. I wonder how interesting THAT would be.

2. You have the opportunity to question someone about something you've always wanted to know and receive a truthful answer; what would your question be?
Does Santa exist? ;_;

3. If you could change one thing in your life, what would it be?
I wouldn't live in "chaos and pain", as the book calls it. I'm a clean person (i.e. I can do laundry), but I'm not organized (i.e. I don't remember to put the clean clothes back in the closet, and when I do, they're not in order).

4. If you could save other people's lives by completing an act that would lead to your own death, would you do it?
Depends. I wouldn't commit suicide for the masses to forgive something I did, but if say, I had the cure to some awful disease in my own body, then I'd probably do it.

5. Would you commit murder if you knew that you could get away with it?
Nope. I don't really see death as a punishment, so I don't see the point in killing someone. Yes, this is coming from a person living in the city with the highest crime rates in Mexico.

1. What is your favorite board game?
Monopoly all the way.

2. What is your favorite card game?
It's called "Continental" in Spanish, not really sure how it's called in English. I'm not really sure how to explain the process either O_o, it kindda comes naturally after playing it so many times.

3. Do you like to play games on the computer or on a gaming system?
On the computer.

4. If so, what is your favorite game to play?
I love Age of Empires II. It never becomes boring for me.

5. Do you like to play games with people or to play them alone?
Depends. My family's usually very busy, and the one person that has time to play games with me (my brother) isn't a very good sport (he absolutely HATES losing), so I usually end up playing alone. On the other hand, if I can find someone that likes the game, as opposed to winning, as much as I do, then it's fine.

These questions come from [info]thefridayfive. ^_^
